FLI: Comic Opera

Thursday, April 25, 2019 - 2:00pm

FLI: Comic Opera  2:00PM - 5:00PM
While most of the best known “grand operas” end tragically, many comic operas have been written and produced by some of the world’s greatest composers and lyricists. In addition to the 14 operettas by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, comic operas have been written by Donizetti, Lehar, Mozart, Rossini, Strauss, Verdi, and Wagner. During this course we will view and discuss outstanding performances of 10 of these including, The Pirates of Penzence, The Mikado and 5 others by Gilbert and Sullivan, The Merry Widow (featuring locals Nathan Gunn and Alek Schrader), and Die Fledermaus (The Bat), and discuss the composer, author, director, and principal cast members of each. Some English and all foreign language performance videos will be shown with English subtitles. The classic Marx Brothers comedy A Night at the Opera (1935) will be included as well as opera-inspired cartoons (e.g., What's Opera Doc). Opera ND will perform The Pirates of Penzance in April 2019, directed by Alek Schrader, and we will review that work prior to its presentation at Notre Dame.
